ELeVATE - Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What are the program start and end dates?
A: May 19 through July 25, 2025
Q: What is needed to apply and when will the application be available?
A: Applications will be accepted starting Monday, December 16th, 2024 through Friday, February 28th, 2025. Please note that you will need a copy of your resume at time of application. Offer letters will be e-mailed on March 17th, 2025. Due to the high volume of applications, only those selected for the program will receive an e-mail.
Q: Who is eligible to apply to the ELeVATE program?
A: Applicants must be one of the following:
1. A Veteran of the US Military engaged in or entering post-secondary education
2. A member of the National Guard or a Reserve component engaged in or entering post-secondary education (includes ROTC).
3. A child or dependent of a Veteran of US Military Service.
Q: What academic background is required for ELeVATE?
A: No particular background is required, but some examples of past participants' academic backgrounds include: all domains of engineering, computer science, rehabilitation science, exercise physiology, psychology, and biology. Most previous participants had GPAs greater than 3.0.
Q: How many students apply to the program each year?
A: From an expected applicant pool of approximately 100, we will accept 5-10 students.
Q: I received an offer of admission. What do I need to do?
A: Once you have accepted your offer, you will be required to complete new hire paperwork, which will include online training modules required by the University of Pittsburgh and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. This material will be provided by HERL and VA staff.
Q: How are students matched with a faculty mentor and research project?
A: Students will indicate their top three project choices on their application based upon the list of proposals found online. A committee will review the applications and select students based on their academic record, accomplishments, and their letter of recommendation (if provided). Every effort is made to match students with one of their choices; however, we cannot guarantee students will be offered one of the projects they list on their application. Every effort will be made to place a program participant with a team and project that suits their skills and academic pursuits.
Q: Can I take classes while participating in HERL experiential research programs?
A: No. All HERL experiential research programs are full-time commitments. Program participants cannot be enrolled in courses during the program.
Q. Is there a stipend for participants?
A: HERL experiential research participants receive a stipend of $5,000.
