Cooper Feted at Sigma Xi Annual Meeting

At the Sigma Xi Annual Meeting on November 6, HERL Director Dr. Rory A. Cooper received the John P. McGovern "Science and Society Award" from the Sigma Xi Research Society and presented the McGovern Lecture - "Participatory Action Design and Engineering: Forging a New Freedom" - to Sigma Xi members and students. Cooper is credited with greatly improving technology for people with disabilities through new paradigms for engineering, design, equity and inclusion. He provided the inspiration and built the foundation for including transitioning wounded, injured, and ill Veterans and Service Members in higher education programs in the STEM and Health Sciences fields.

Sigma Xi is the scientific research honor society founded in 1886 to reward excellence in scientific research and to encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among scientists in all fields. The McGovern Award has recognized achievements by a scientist or engineer that transcend their career as a researcher. Recipients of this award represent a broad spectrum of individuals whose varied activities supported research, the communication of science, and the impact of science on society.
