Class Project

wheel frame caster footrest
Return to India Chair HOME

The purpose of this project was to:
  • Provide students with an opportunity to learn the basics of the engineering design process by participating in the development of an actual project
  • Use the knowledge base at HERL and the University of Pittsburgh to develop a wheelchair that could be constructed of common materials using common manufacturing processes.
  • Make the design available as a basis for the development of other chairs.
The wheelchair was designed to be adjustable. Features vs. construction complexity were analyzed.

A reclining back is a desirable feature that contributes to comfort by allowing a person to re-distribute their weight. This feature was not added however because of the increased complexity it placed upon the design and construction of the wheelchair.

Swing away footrests were another feature not included. Footrests adjustable for height were less complex and therefore easier to build and replicate.
