ASSESSMENT OF AN EXPERIMENTAL ROBOTIC-ASSISTED TRANSFER DEVICE: PHASE II

This research study will evaluate and compare the biomechanics, effectiveness and usability of a robotic transfer assist device (HERL-RATD) with the use of a commercially available manual hydralic (Hoyer) lift.

YOU MAY BE ELIGIBLE TO PARTICIPATE IF YOU:

Are a clinician or caregiver who:

  • Is 18 years of age or older.
  • Has at least one year of clinical or caregiver experience performing dependent transfers.
  • Does not have a history of injury that would be aggravated by performing dependent transfers.
  • Is able to participate in a 4 hour testing protocol and pair with a power wheelchair user.

Are a power wheelchair user who:

  • Is 18 years of age or older.
  • Weighs 180 lbs. or less, fits in an 18-inch wide and 16-inch deep seat, and does not require complex postural supports.
  • Uses an electric power wheelchair at least 3 days a week and requires a caregiver/clinician to assist with safe transfers.
  • Does not have an existing pressure ulcer, extremilty fracture, or inability to sit beyond 4 hours.
  • Can pair with a clinician/caregiver.

Eligible participants will be asked to complete a series of totally assisted lift transfers, in everyday settings with each device. Participants will receive $100 for completing the study. Location: Human Engineering Research Labs (Bakery Square, 6425 Penn Ave., Suite 400, Pittsburgh, PA, 15206).
